Key Facts about Influenza:
  • Flu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe. Over a period of 30 years in the US, estimates of flu-associated deaths ranged from about 3,000 to 49,000 people with an annual average of 23,600 people, in addition to 220,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations3.
  • Activity typically peaks in late January through February, but can sometimes peak earlier or later, depending on the strain of flu and severity of the season.
  • Getting the flu results in lost work hours due to taking care of yourself or caring for family members.
  •  Flu vaccines have an excellent safety record. Hundreds of millions of Americans have safely gotten flu vaccines and most people generally do not experience any side effects after getting a flu vaccine.
